 The N.M. Wadia Institute of Cardiology boasts of one of the best and most experienced cardiovascular surgery teams in Poona. Over the past 18 years, more than 6,000 patients have had their heart surgery performed at the N.M. Wadia Institute of Cardiology - ranging from valve replacements to coronary bypass surgeries. 
Infection is one of the commonest complications of open heart surgery several studies conducted the world over have revealed that cardiac surgery and renal transplant surgery should never share the same premises for other surgical operations. Hence the Institute decided to construct two exclusive cardiac operation theatres housing the latest equipment where no other operations are permitted. These include Laminar air-flow cold shadowless Hanalux lamps, Sarns heart-lung machine and the latest model of the Datascope & Arrow Balloon Pump, Biopump coronary perfusion, continuous cardiac output monitor, Haemotherm Warming blanket and recently the Medtronics Octopus.

Mitral Valve Repair and Replacement Surgery
Mitral valve repair is the procedure of choice for most patients with mitral regurgitation (a leaky valve). When the leak is caused by a degenerative valve disease (such as mitral valve prolapse or myxomatous mitral valve disease), a variety of repair techniques may be employed. These valves can be repaired rather than replaced in 95% of patients.

Bypass Surgery on a Beating Heart or M.I.C.A.S.
Recently we have acquired techniques and equipment (Octopus) to perform bypass surgery on the heart without stopping the heart or using the heart lung machine. This procedure has numerous advantages over conventional bypass surgery such as
  • Reduces costs as compared to conventional bypass surgery.
  • No blood transfusion required in most cases.
  • Reduced days of hospitalization and quick recovery.
  • Applicable in cases where other associated diseases make conventional bypass surgery hazardous. e.g. Chronic renal failure, cerebro vascular disease (stroke), severe diabetes etc.

    • The first M.I.C.A.S. surgery was done in April 1998. The Institute was the first in Poona to perform this procedure and continues along with many other hospitals in the country doing this procedure.
